Acupuncture for IVF: Natural, Personalized Support Throughout Your IVF Journey

In vitro fertilization can be an exciting and hopeful process, but it can also place significant physical and emotional demands on the body. Acupuncture offers a natural, complementary approach that can be incorporated alongside IVF to support reproductive health throughout treatment.

At Acupuncture for Balanced Wellness, we have extensive experience providing acupuncture for patients undergoing IVF in Chicago. We work with patients before and during ovarian stimulation, around egg retrieval, in preparation for fresh or frozen embryo transfer, and during the early stages of pregnancy.

Acupuncture has become increasingly integrated into fertility care, and many fertility clinics recommend or support acupuncture for their patients during IVF. A growing body of research has found improved reproductive outcomes when acupuncture is combined with IVF, including improvements in clinical pregnancy and implantation rates.

How Can Acupuncture Support IVF?

Acupuncture has been studied as an adjunct to IVF for decades. Research has explored its effects on reproductive outcomes as well as ovarian response, uterine and ovarian blood flow, endometrial receptivity, stress, anxiety, pain, and other factors that can influence the IVF experience.

Rather than limiting acupuncture to one or two treatments on embryo transfer day, we generally take a more comprehensive approach. Treatment can begin before an IVF cycle and continue through ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, embryo transfer, and early pregnancy when appropriate.

Supporting Ovarian Response During IVF

During ovarian stimulation, fertility medications are used to encourage multiple follicles to develop before egg retrieval. Acupuncture can be incorporated during this stage to support reproductive function while the ovaries respond to stimulation.

Research examining the timing of acupuncture during IVF has produced particularly encouraging results when acupuncture is provided during controlled ovarian stimulation. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 38 randomized trials found a significant improvement in clinical pregnancy rates when acupuncture was administered during ovarian stimulation in fresh IVF cycles.

Supporting Blood Flow and the Reproductive Environment

Healthy circulation is important to ovarian and uterine function. Acupuncture has physiological effects on circulation and vascular regulation and is commonly used during fertility treatment to support a healthy reproductive environment.

Treatment is individualized according to where you are in your IVF cycle. The acupuncture approach used during ovarian stimulation, for example, may differ from the treatment provided while preparing the endometrium for embryo transfer.

Supporting the Endometrium and Implantation

Successful implantation depends on a complex interaction between a healthy embryo and a receptive uterine environment. For this reason, supporting the endometrium is an important part of IVF care.

Acupuncture has been extensively studied in relation to embryo transfer and implantation. Multiple studies and meta-analyses have reported improvements in implantation and clinical pregnancy outcomes when acupuncture is incorporated into IVF treatment.

Acupuncture protocols may be used during the weeks leading up to embryo transfer as well as around the time of transfer itself. Research increasingly suggests that the benefits of acupuncture may be greater when treatment is incorporated throughout the IVF cycle rather than limited to a single treatment day.

Reducing Stress and Supporting the Nervous System

IVF can involve weeks or months of medications, procedures, appointments, testing, waiting, and uncertainty. Acupuncture provides an opportunity to support the nervous system and promote a calmer physiological state during this demanding process.

Research has found that acupuncture can help reduce anxiety among women undergoing IVF. Many of our fertility patients also tell us that their acupuncture appointments become an important time to relax and decompress during treatment.

Stress is not the cause of infertility, and patients should never feel responsible for an unsuccessful cycle because they were unable to "relax enough." Stress support is simply one of the many ways acupuncture can make the IVF process more manageable.

Acupuncture During Ovarian Stimulation

Acupuncture can be scheduled alongside the ovarian stimulation phase of IVF and adjusted as your cycle progresses. We take into consideration your medication protocol, follicular development, symptoms, previous IVF response, and anticipated retrieval date.

Recent research has placed increasing attention on this stage of IVF. Studies examining acupuncture during controlled ovarian stimulation have reported improvements in reproductive outcomes, and newer analyses suggest that receiving multiple acupuncture treatments throughout an IVF cycle may offer greater benefit than limiting acupuncture to the day of embryo transfer.

This is consistent with the approach we have used in our fertility practice for many years: when possible, we prefer to work with patients throughout the IVF process rather than treating embryo transfer as an isolated event.

Acupuncture Before and After Egg Retrieval

As follicles develop during stimulation, patients may experience pelvic fullness, bloating, abdominal discomfort, fatigue, headaches, digestive changes, or emotional stress.

Acupuncture during this stage can be used to support relaxation, manage treatment-related symptoms, and complement the body's response throughout the stimulation and retrieval process.

After retrieval, treatment can be adjusted according to how you are feeling and whether you are preparing for a fresh transfer, freezing embryos for a later cycle, or undergoing additional testing before transfer.

Acupuncture for Embryo Transfer

Embryo transfer is one of the most important stages of an IVF cycle, and acupuncture around embryo transfer has been studied extensively.

A number of clinical trials and systematic reviews have reported improved pregnancy outcomes when acupuncture is used in conjunction with embryo transfer. Research has examined acupuncture immediately before and after transfer as well as protocols that begin earlier and continue through the transfer cycle.

Our goal around embryo transfer is to promote relaxation, support healthy uterine function and circulation, and create a calm environment during this important stage of treatment.

For patients undergoing a frozen embryo transfer, acupuncture can also be incorporated during the weeks leading up to transfer as the endometrium is being prepared.

Acupuncture for Frozen Embryo Transfer

Frozen embryo transfer, or FET, has become an increasingly common part of IVF treatment. Acupuncture can be coordinated with either a medicated or natural FET cycle and adjusted according to your individual protocol.

Research on acupuncture before frozen embryo transfer has been particularly encouraging. A systematic review and meta-analysis examining the timing of acupuncture during IVF found significant improvements in both clinical pregnancy and live birth rates among women receiving acupuncture before frozen embryo transfer.

Rather than applying the same protocol to every patient, we coordinate treatment with your transfer timeline and consider your endometrial development, medications, previous transfer history, symptoms, and overall reproductive health.

How Early Should I Start Acupuncture Before IVF?

When time allows, we often recommend beginning acupuncture before ovarian stimulation begins. Starting earlier gives us an opportunity to understand your menstrual cycle, fertility history, previous IVF response, overall health, and any symptoms or concerns that may be relevant to treatment.

Some patients begin acupuncture several months before IVF, while others come to us after their stimulation cycle has already started. It is not too late to begin acupuncture simply because your IVF cycle is underway.

Research examining acupuncture timing and treatment frequency increasingly suggests that repeated treatment throughout the IVF process may provide greater reproductive benefit than limiting acupuncture to one or two sessions.

Your treatment schedule will be individualized according to your IVF timeline rather than following the exact same schedule for every patient.

How Often Should I Have Acupuncture During IVF?

There is no single acupuncture schedule that is appropriate for every IVF patient. Treatment frequency depends on where you are in your IVF cycle, your fertility history, previous response to IVF, and the amount of time available before retrieval or transfer.

Many patients receive acupuncture regularly during the weeks leading up to and throughout an IVF cycle, with treatment frequency adjusted around important stages such as ovarian stimulation, retrieval, and embryo transfer.

Current research is increasingly examining the importance of treatment frequency and timing. Recent analyses suggest that protocols involving multiple acupuncture treatments during the IVF process may produce better reproductive outcomes than protocols consisting only of acupuncture on embryo transfer day.

What Does the Research Say About Acupuncture and IVF?

Acupuncture is one of the most extensively studied complementary therapies used alongside IVF. Dozens of randomized clinical trials and multiple systematic reviews have examined whether adding acupuncture to IVF can improve reproductive outcomes.

A number of these studies have found meaningful benefits. Research has reported improvements in clinical pregnancy rates, implantation rates, and, in some analyses, live birth rates among women receiving acupuncture in conjunction with IVF.

A large systematic review and meta-analysis published in 2024 included 25 clinical trials involving more than 4,700 participants. The pooled clinical pregnancy rate was significantly higher in the acupuncture groups than in the control groups, and the pooled live birth rate was also significantly higher.

A 2025 network meta-analysis examining 96 randomized controlled trials involving more than 14,000 participants found that several acupuncture approaches were associated with improved clinical pregnancy outcomes. Some of the strongest results were seen with acupuncture protocols beginning before egg retrieval rather than treatment limited to embryo transfer day.

More recently, a 2026 meta-analysis of 42 randomized trials involving more than 9,000 women found that acupuncture used alongside assisted reproductive treatment was associated with higher clinical pregnancy and implantation rates. The analysis also suggested that treatment during ovarian stimulation or throughout both stimulation and embryo transfer may offer greater benefits than acupuncture limited to embryo transfer alone.

Taken together, the research provides a strong rationale for incorporating acupuncture as a complementary therapy throughout IVF treatment. While IVF outcomes are influenced by many factors and no therapy can guarantee pregnancy, acupuncture offers a natural, well-studied way to provide additional reproductive and whole-person support during IVF.

Why Do Fertility Clinics Recommend Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has become increasingly familiar within reproductive medicine. Many fertility clinics and reproductive specialists recommend or support acupuncture for patients undergoing IVF, and many of our patients first come to our office after their fertility clinic suggests incorporating acupuncture into their treatment plan.

One reason is that acupuncture can be integrated alongside conventional fertility treatment without replacing the medical care provided by your reproductive endocrinologist. It offers an additional way to support reproductive health while also helping patients manage the physical and emotional demands of IVF.

Our role is complementary. We work with your IVF timeline and medical protocol rather than asking you to choose between acupuncture and conventional fertility treatment.

An Individualized Approach to IVF Acupuncture

IVF acupuncture should not be identical for every patient. Your treatment may differ depending on your age, diagnosis, ovarian reserve, menstrual history, previous IVF cycles, medication protocol, response to stimulation, embryo transfer plan, and overall health.

At each visit, we consider where you are in your IVF cycle and adjust your acupuncture treatment accordingly. Depending on your needs, treatment may also incorporate electroacupuncture, heat therapy, nutrition and lifestyle recommendations, stress-management strategies, or other supportive therapies.

Our goal is to provide acupuncture that complements your fertility treatment while supporting you as a whole person throughout the process.
