Acupuncture for Fertility

Acupuncture for Fertility: Natural, Personalized Fertility Support

Trying to conceive can be exciting, stressful, and sometimes overwhelming. Whether you are hoping to conceive naturally, preparing for pregnancy, undergoing IUI or IVF, or looking for additional support for a reproductive health condition, acupuncture offers a natural, holistic approach to supporting fertility and overall reproductive health.

At Acupuncture for Balanced Wellness, fertility acupuncture has been an important part of our Chicago practice since 2008. Our experienced acupuncturists provide highly individualized treatment based on your menstrual cycle, reproductive health, fertility history, medical treatment, lifestyle, and where you are in your fertility journey.

Acupuncture can be used on its own as part of a natural fertility approach or alongside conventional fertility care, including ovulation-induction medications, IUI, IVF, and other assisted reproductive technologies.

How Can Acupuncture Support Fertility?

Fertility depends on the coordinated function of the reproductive, hormonal, nervous, and metabolic systems. Acupuncture has been studied for its effects on many of the physiological processes involved in reproduction, including menstrual and ovulatory function, reproductive hormones, ovarian and uterine blood flow, endometrial receptivity, and nervous system regulation. Needling specific points can improve blood circulation to the reproductive system. Better blood flow helps bring more nutrients to follicles and creates a thicker, more receptive uterine lining for embryo implantation.

Rather than focusing only on the day of ovulation or embryo transfer, we take a broader approach to reproductive health. Treatment may be used to support menstrual regularity, ovulation, ovarian function, uterine health, stress regulation, and the overall environment for conception.

Supporting Healthy Menstrual and Ovulatory Function

A healthy menstrual cycle provides important information about reproductive function. Irregular cycles, inconsistent ovulation, painful periods, very short or long cycles, or changes in menstrual flow can sometimes accompany fertility difficulties.

Acupuncture can help support healthier menstrual and ovulatory function. Treatment is individualized throughout the menstrual cycle rather than using the same acupuncture points at every visit.

For women who do not ovulate regularly, such as some women with PCOS, supporting more consistent ovulation can be an especially important part of fertility treatment.

Supporting Ovarian Function

The ovaries play a central role in fertility through follicular development, ovulation, and reproductive hormone production. Acupuncture has been studied for its effects on ovarian function and the neuroendocrine pathways involved in reproduction.

Research has also investigated acupuncture during ovarian stimulation and in women with diminished ovarian reserve or poor ovarian response. These studies have reported encouraging findings involving ovarian response, the number and quality of oocytes and embryos, implantation, and pregnancy outcomes.

For patients preparing for IVF, treatment can be coordinated with the ovarian stimulation phase of the IVF cycle.

Supporting Uterine Blood Flow and Endometrial Health

A healthy uterine environment is essential for implantation and pregnancy. Adequate circulation helps deliver oxygen, hormones, and nutrients to reproductive tissues and supports normal endometrial development.

Acupuncture has been studied for its effects on uterine circulation and endometrial receptivity. For patients preparing for natural conception or embryo transfer, supporting the uterine environment may be one component of the overall treatment plan.

Supporting Hormonal Regulation

Reproductive hormones work together in a carefully coordinated cycle. Conditions such as PCOS, irregular ovulation, thyroid disorders, metabolic dysfunction, and changes associated with reproductive aging can influence this hormonal environment.

Acupuncture influences the nervous and endocrine systems and has been studied for its effects on reproductive hormones and the signaling pathways involved in ovarian and menstrual function.

Our goal is not simply to target one hormone. We look at menstrual patterns, ovulation, reproductive health, metabolism, sleep, stress, nutrition, and other factors that may influence fertility.

Acupuncture for Natural Conception

Not every fertility patient is undergoing IVF. Many of our patients come to us because they would like to optimize their reproductive health while trying to conceive naturally.

For natural conception, treatment may focus on supporting regular ovulation, healthy menstrual cycles, reproductive circulation, hormonal regulation, and overall health while identifying factors that may be making conception more difficult.

We also consider the timing of intercourse, menstrual cycle patterns, cervical mucus when relevant, nutrition, sleep, stress, exercise, metabolic health, and the reproductive health of both partners.

Because follicular development and reproductive changes occur over time, beginning acupuncture before conception allows us to work with several menstrual cycles rather than focusing on a single fertile window.

Acupuncture for IVF

Acupuncture is widely used alongside in vitro fertilization and has become increasingly integrated into fertility care. Many fertility clinics and reproductive specialists recommend or support acupuncture during IVF treatment, and many of our patients first come to our practice after their fertility clinic suggests adding acupuncture to their treatment plan.

Acupuncture can be incorporated at several stages of IVF, including before and during ovarian stimulation, around egg retrieval, while preparing the endometrium, before frozen or fresh embryo transfer, and during early pregnancy.

Research on acupuncture and IVF has produced encouraging results. Multiple systematic reviews and meta-analyses have reported improvements in reproductive outcomes, including clinical pregnancy, implantation, and, in some analyses, live birth rates when acupuncture is incorporated alongside IVF.

Recent research also suggests that acupuncture may be particularly valuable when it is incorporated throughout the IVF process rather than limited to one or two treatments on embryo transfer day.

If you are currently undergoing IVF, your acupuncture treatments can be coordinated with your fertility clinic's medication, stimulation, retrieval, and embryo transfer schedule.

Acupuncture During Ovarian Stimulation

During an IVF cycle, acupuncture can be coordinated with controlled ovarian stimulation as follicles develop in preparation for egg retrieval.

Research examining the timing of acupuncture during IVF has found particularly encouraging results when acupuncture is provided during ovarian stimulation. Treatment during this stage can also help support relaxation and manage some of the physical and emotional demands associated with fertility medications and frequent monitoring.

Acupuncture for Embryo Transfer

Acupuncture around embryo transfer has been studied extensively. Clinical trials and systematic reviews have reported improvements in pregnancy outcomes when acupuncture is incorporated into IVF and embryo transfer protocols.

For patients preparing for a fresh or frozen embryo transfer, acupuncture may be provided during the weeks leading up to transfer as well as around the transfer itself. Treatment focuses on supporting the uterine environment, promoting relaxation, and complementing the medical treatment provided by your fertility clinic.

What Does the Research Say About Acupuncture and Fertility?

Acupuncture is one of the most extensively studied complementary therapies used in fertility treatment. Dozens of randomized clinical trials and numerous systematic reviews have investigated acupuncture for reproductive health and assisted fertility treatment.

The research is particularly substantial for women undergoing IVF. A large systematic review and meta-analysis involving 25 clinical trials and more than 4,700 participants found significantly higher clinical pregnancy and live birth rates among women receiving acupuncture compared with control groups.

A more recent systematic review involving 42 trials and approximately 7,400 women undergoing IVF also found significantly higher biochemical and clinical pregnancy rates with acupuncture. Researchers additionally reported benefits for anxiety and pain during fertility treatment.

Research examining the timing and frequency of acupuncture has also produced important findings. A systematic review of 38 randomized trials involving nearly 6,000 women found improved clinical pregnancy rates when acupuncture was provided during ovarian stimulation in fresh IVF cycles. In frozen embryo transfer cycles, acupuncture before transfer was associated with improvements in both clinical pregnancy and live birth rates.

Newer research is also examining acupuncture's effects on egg and embryo development. A 2026 systematic review found that acupuncture used alongside IVF significantly improved the rate of high-quality embryos and fertilization, providing additional evidence that acupuncture may offer benefits earlier in the reproductive process as well.

Taken together, this growing body of research supports acupuncture as a valuable natural and complementary therapy for fertility and assisted reproduction. Treatment timing, frequency, fertility diagnosis, and individual reproductive health all appear to influence outcomes, which is one reason we favor an individualized course of treatment rather than a one-size-fits-all fertility protocol.

Acupuncture for PCOS and Fertility

PCOS is one of the most common causes of irregular ovulation and fertility difficulties. Women with PCOS may ovulate infrequently or unpredictably, making conception more difficult even when ovarian reserve is good.

Acupuncture can be used to support menstrual regularity, ovulation, reproductive hormone regulation, and overall reproductive health in women with PCOS. Because insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction are also common with PCOS, nutrition, exercise, blood sugar regulation, sleep, and other metabolic factors may be incorporated into the treatment plan.

Acupuncture can be used while trying to conceive naturally or alongside medications such as letrozole or clomiphene, IUI, and IVF.

Acupuncture for Endometriosis and Fertility

Endometriosis can affect fertility through several pathways, including inflammation, pelvic pain, altered pelvic anatomy, and changes in the reproductive environment.

Acupuncture is commonly used to help manage menstrual and pelvic pain while supporting reproductive health. For women with endometriosis who are trying to conceive, treatment may be incorporated into a natural fertility plan or coordinated with IUI or IVF.

Our approach considers both fertility goals and symptoms such as painful periods, pelvic discomfort, digestive changes, and stress.

Acupuncture for Diminished Ovarian Reserve

Diminished ovarian reserve can be an especially stressful fertility diagnosis. It generally means that the number of remaining eggs is lower than expected for age or that the ovaries may respond less strongly to fertility medications.

Acupuncture cannot restore the number of eggs in the ovaries or reverse reproductive aging. However, emerging research suggests that acupuncture may provide meaningful support for women with diminished ovarian reserve who are undergoing fertility treatment.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials involving women with diminished ovarian reserve undergoing IVF or ICSI reported improvements in clinical pregnancy, live birth, embryo implantation, number of retrieved oocytes, and number of high-quality embryos among women receiving acupuncture.

For patients with diminished ovarian reserve, we focus on supporting the reproductive environment and overall health while working realistically within the patient's age, ovarian reserve, fertility history, and medical treatment plan.

Male Fertility Matters Too

Fertility is not solely a women's health issue. Male factors contribute to a significant percentage of couples experiencing difficulty conceiving, and evaluating both partners can prevent unnecessary delays in identifying potential obstacles to pregnancy.

When appropriate, acupuncture and lifestyle support can also be incorporated into care for male fertility concerns. Nutrition, sleep, exercise, heat exposure, alcohol, smoking, medications, environmental exposures, and other lifestyle factors can influence sperm health.

For couples trying to conceive, we encourage a whole-couple approach rather than placing the entire responsibility for fertility on the female partner.

Stress and the Fertility Journey

Trying to conceive can become emotionally exhausting, particularly after months or years of negative pregnancy tests, pregnancy loss, fertility testing, medications, procedures, or unsuccessful fertility treatments.

Acupuncture helps regulate the nervous system and promotes relaxation. Research involving women undergoing fertility treatment has also found reductions in anxiety with acupuncture.

Having stress does not mean that stress caused your fertility difficulties. Patients should not feel responsible for an unsuccessful cycle because they were unable to "relax enough." Stress support is simply one of the many ways acupuncture can help support patients during a demanding fertility journey.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Fertility

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have been used to address menstrual and reproductive health for centuries. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, fertility reflects the health and balance of several interconnected systems rather than the function of the reproductive organs alone.

Your acupuncturist may consider your menstrual cycle along with digestion, sleep, energy, temperature, stress, pain, cervical mucus, and other symptoms. Tongue and pulse findings may also be incorporated into the traditional Chinese medicine assessment.

This allows treatment to be highly individualized. Two patients with the same fertility diagnosis may receive very different acupuncture treatments based on their individual presentation.

Chinese Herbal Medicine, Nutrition and Lifestyle

Fertility is influenced by more than reproductive hormones alone. Nutrition, metabolic health, sleep, physical activity, stress, digestive health, alcohol, smoking, environmental exposures, and overall health can all influence the reproductive environment.

When appropriate, we may discuss practical nutrition and lifestyle strategies that complement acupuncture and your medical fertility treatment.

Chinese herbal medicine may also be considered in selected cases when appropriate. For patients undergoing IVF, IUI, or taking fertility medications, herbal treatment should be coordinated carefully with the medical fertility plan.

When Should I Start Acupuncture for Fertility?

If time allows, beginning acupuncture before you actively begin fertility treatment gives us an opportunity to work with several menstrual cycles and address menstrual, reproductive, metabolic, and lifestyle factors before conception or IVF.

However, you do not need to postpone fertility treatment in order to begin acupuncture. Many patients first come to us after an IVF cycle has already started or when an embryo transfer is only weeks away. Treatment can be adapted to wherever you are in the process.

The frequency of acupuncture is individualized according to your fertility history, menstrual cycle, diagnosis, age, treatment plan, and whether you are trying naturally or undergoing IUI or IVF.

What to Expect at Your First Fertility Acupuncture Visit

Your first appointment includes a detailed discussion of your fertility and overall health history. We may discuss your menstrual cycle, ovulation, previous pregnancies, pregnancy losses, fertility testing, medications, previous fertility treatment, digestion, sleep, stress, exercise, nutrition, and other health concerns.

If you are undergoing fertility treatment, it is helpful to bring information about your diagnosis, recent laboratory testing, medications, ovarian reserve testing, semen analysis when relevant, and your current fertility treatment plan.

Your acupuncturist will then develop an individualized treatment based on your goals and where you are in your menstrual or fertility treatment cycle.
