Acupuncture for PCOS: A Holistic Approach to Fertility, Hormonal & Metabolic Health

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex hormonal and metabolic condition that can affect menstrual cycles, ovulation, fertility, blood sugar regulation, weight, skin, hair, and overall well-being. It is also one of the most common causes of ovulatory infertility, which is why many women first seek treatment for PCOS when they are trying to conceive.

At Acupuncture for Balanced Wellness, fertility is an important part of our approach to PCOS. We use acupuncture to support healthier menstrual and ovulatory function, reproductive health, and the hormonal and metabolic factors that can influence fertility. Treatment is individualized according to your menstrual cycle, symptoms, fertility goals, metabolic health, and whether you are trying to conceive naturally or undergoing fertility treatment.

Acupuncture can be used as part of a natural approach to PCOS or alongside ovulation-induction medications, IUI, IVF, metformin, nutrition, and lifestyle changes when appropriate.

Understanding PCOS

PCOS is one of the most common hormonal conditions affecting women of reproductive age. Despite its name, PCOS involves much more than the ovaries. It can affect reproductive hormones, ovulation, insulin regulation, metabolism, and other systems throughout the body.

Women with PCOS may experience:

  • Irregular, infrequent, or absent periods
  • Irregular or absent ovulation
  • Difficulty conceiving
  • Elevated androgen levels
  • Acne or oily skin
  • Excess facial or body hair
  • Thinning scalp hair
  • Insulin resistance
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Fatigue or changes in energy

Not every woman with PCOS has all of these symptoms. Some women are lean and metabolically healthy, while others have significant insulin resistance or difficulty managing their weight. Some have very irregular periods, while others menstruate regularly but still experience androgen-related or fertility concerns.

This variability is one reason PCOS treatment should be individualized rather than taking the same approach with every patient.

How Acupuncture Can Help With PCOS

Acupuncture has been studied for a number of the reproductive, hormonal, and metabolic changes associated with PCOS. Research has examined its effects on menstrual frequency, ovulation, reproductive hormones, insulin regulation, fertility, and other aspects of PCOS.

From a modern physiological perspective, acupuncture influences the nervous and endocrine systems and has been studied for its effects on several pathways involved in reproductive and metabolic regulation.

For many of our patients, the primary goals of PCOS acupuncture are to support more regular menstrual cycles and ovulation, improve reproductive health, address fertility concerns, and support the metabolic factors that can influence hormonal health.

Acupuncture for PCOS and Fertility

Fertility is one of the most common reasons women with PCOS seek acupuncture. PCOS can interfere with fertility primarily by disrupting normal ovulation. When ovulation occurs irregularly or not at all, there are fewer opportunities for conception and it can be difficult to identify the fertile window.

Acupuncture can be incorporated into a fertility plan to support ovulation, menstrual regularity, reproductive hormone regulation, and overall reproductive health in women with PCOS. Treatment can be used while trying to conceive naturally or alongside fertility medications, IUI, and IVF.

Research on acupuncture for PCOS-related infertility has produced encouraging results. Studies have reported improvements in ovulation and pregnancy outcomes, particularly when acupuncture is combined with conventional fertility treatment.

For women trying to conceive naturally, our goal is often to encourage more consistent ovulation and menstrual cycles while also addressing metabolic factors such as insulin resistance that can influence reproductive function.

For women undergoing fertility treatment, acupuncture can be coordinated with your reproductive endocrinologist's treatment plan. We regularly work with patients using ovulation-induction medications such as letrozole or clomiphene, undergoing IUI, or preparing for IVF and embryo transfer.

Supporting More Regular Menstrual Cycles

Irregular or absent periods are among the most common signs of PCOS. These irregular cycles often occur because ovulation is happening infrequently or not at all.

Acupuncture can be used to support healthier menstrual function and more regular cycles in women with PCOS. Clinical research has reported improvements in menstrual frequency with acupuncture, and menstrual regulation is one of the primary goals we commonly address when treating PCOS.

Rather than using exactly the same acupuncture points at every visit, treatment may change according to where you are in your menstrual cycle and the pattern of symptoms you are experiencing.

Supporting Ovulation and Reproductive Function

PCOS is one of the most common causes of ovulatory dysfunction. Supporting more consistent ovulation can therefore be especially important for women with PCOS who are trying to conceive.

Acupuncture has been studied for its effects on the neuroendocrine pathways involved in ovarian and reproductive function. Clinical studies have reported improvements in ovulation and menstrual frequency, including research examining acupuncture in combination with conventional PCOS and fertility treatments.

For patients trying to conceive, we tailor treatment to support reproductive health while also addressing the metabolic and hormonal patterns that can accompany PCOS.

Supporting Healthy Hormonal Regulation

Elevated androgens such as testosterone are a common feature of PCOS and can contribute to acne, unwanted facial or body hair, scalp hair thinning, and irregular ovulation.

Research on acupuncture for PCOS has reported changes in several reproductive hormones, including reductions in testosterone in some studies. Acupuncture's effects on the nervous and endocrine systems provide one potential pathway through which treatment may support healthier hormonal regulation.

Because PCOS involves multiple interacting hormonal systems, our goal is not simply to target one hormone. We look at menstrual function, reproductive health, metabolic health, stress, sleep, nutrition, and other factors that can influence the overall hormonal environment.

PCOS, Acupuncture and IVF

Some women with PCOS ultimately use IVF to conceive, and acupuncture can be incorporated throughout the IVF process. Treatment may be provided before and during ovarian stimulation, around egg retrieval, while preparing for embryo transfer, and during the transfer cycle.

Recent research specifically examining women with PCOS undergoing IVF has reported encouraging results. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of 13 randomized clinical trials involving more than 1,200 women found that acupuncture was associated with higher clinical pregnancy, high-quality embryo, and live birth rates. The analysis also found reductions in the amount and duration of gonadotropin medication used during ovarian stimulation and a lower incidence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

If you are undergoing IVF, your acupuncture treatments can be coordinated with your fertility clinic and adjusted according to your stimulation, retrieval, and embryo transfer schedule.

Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Health

PCOS is not only a reproductive condition. Insulin resistance and elevated insulin levels are common and can contribute to increased androgen production, irregular ovulation, weight gain, cravings, and difficulty losing weight.

This connection between reproductive and metabolic health is particularly important in our approach to PCOS. Improving metabolic health can also be relevant for women whose primary goal is fertility.

Research has explored acupuncture's effects on insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism in women with PCOS. Some studies have reported improvements in markers of insulin resistance, particularly when acupuncture is combined with other treatments.

Acupuncture is only one part of the picture. Nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, and healthy body composition can have a significant influence on insulin sensitivity and metabolic health. When appropriate, these areas become part of the overall treatment plan.

PCOS and Weight Management

Weight is not the cause of PCOS, and PCOS affects women of many different body types. However, insulin resistance and other metabolic changes associated with PCOS can make weight management more difficult for some women.

Rather than treating acupuncture as a weight-loss treatment, we focus on the underlying metabolic environment. Supporting blood sugar regulation, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress, and sustainable lifestyle habits can be especially important for women with insulin-resistant PCOS.

For patients who want more comprehensive metabolic support, our Functional Medicine approach can be incorporated alongside acupuncture.

Acupuncture and Metformin for PCOS

Metformin is frequently prescribed for women with PCOS, particularly when insulin resistance or metabolic dysfunction is present. Acupuncture does not have to be an alternative to metformin or other conventional treatments.

Research has examined the combination of acupuncture and metformin in women with PCOS. A systematic review of randomized clinical trials found that acupuncture combined with metformin produced better outcomes than metformin alone for pregnancy rates, ovulation rates, and measures of insulin resistance.

For some patients, the most effective approach may involve combining conventional treatment with acupuncture, nutrition, exercise, and other strategies rather than relying on any single therapy.

Stress, the Nervous System and PCOS

Living with irregular cycles, fertility challenges, unwanted hair growth, acne, weight concerns, or uncertainty about long-term health can be stressful. Fertility treatment can add another layer of emotional and physical stress.

Acupuncture helps regulate the nervous system and promotes relaxation, making stress support another valuable part of PCOS treatment. Many patients find their acupuncture visits provide an opportunity to decompress while we simultaneously address their reproductive and metabolic health.

Stress is not the cause of PCOS or infertility. Stress management is simply one component of supporting overall health during what can be a physically and emotionally demanding experience.

A Whole-Person Approach to PCOS

PCOS is an excellent example of why reproductive, hormonal, and metabolic health should not always be treated separately.

At Acupuncture for Balanced Wellness, we look beyond the diagnosis to understand the patterns that are most relevant to you. Depending on your individual needs, your treatment plan may consider:

  • Menstrual cycle and ovulation patterns
  • Fertility goals and previous fertility treatment
  • Blood sugar and insulin regulation
  • Nutrition and protein intake
  • Fiber and digestive health
  • Exercise and movement
  • Sleep
  • Stress
  • Weight and body composition when relevant
  • Medications and supplements

Our goal is not to overwhelm you with a complicated protocol. We focus on practical strategies that can have the greatest impact on your reproductive and metabolic health.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and PCOS

Traditional Chinese Medicine has been used to address menstrual and reproductive concerns for centuries. According to Chinese medicine theory, irregular cycles, difficulty ovulating, and other PCOS symptoms can reflect different underlying patterns involving the body's energy, circulation, and organ systems.

Your acupuncturist may consider your menstrual cycle along with digestion, energy, sleep, temperature, stress, pain, and other symptoms. Tongue and pulse findings may also be incorporated into the traditional Chinese medicine assessment.

Because women with PCOS can present very differently, two patients with the same medical diagnosis may receive very different acupuncture treatments.

Electroacupuncture for PCOS

Electroacupuncture is a technique in which a gentle electrical current is applied between selected acupuncture needles. It has been studied extensively in PCOS research and may be incorporated into treatment when appropriate.

Low-frequency electroacupuncture has been investigated for its effects on menstrual function, reproductive hormones, ovarian function, and metabolic regulation. Treatment is generally comfortable, and the intensity is adjusted to the patient's tolerance.

What Does the Research Say About Acupuncture for PCOS?

Acupuncture for PCOS has been investigated in randomized clinical trials and systematic reviews, with research focusing on menstrual regularity, ovulation, reproductive hormones, insulin resistance, pregnancy, and fertility treatment outcomes.

Several systematic reviews have reported encouraging findings. Research has found improvements in menstrual frequency and changes in reproductive hormones such as luteinizing hormone and testosterone. Studies examining acupuncture in combination with metformin have also reported improvements in ovulation, pregnancy rates, and insulin resistance compared with metformin alone.

Research involving women with PCOS who are trying to conceive has also produced promising results. Studies have examined acupuncture alongside fertility medications such as letrozole and clomiphene, while more recent research has investigated acupuncture for women with PCOS undergoing IVF.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of women with PCOS undergoing IVF found higher clinical pregnancy and live birth rates among women receiving acupuncture, adding to the growing body of research examining acupuncture as a complementary treatment for PCOS-related fertility concerns.

Not every study has produced the same results, and researchers continue to investigate which treatment protocols, frequencies, and patient populations receive the greatest benefit. Taken together, however, the research provides a strong rationale for incorporating acupuncture into a comprehensive approach to PCOS, particularly for women seeking support for menstrual regularity, ovulation, fertility, and metabolic health.

What to Expect From PCOS Acupuncture

Your first appointment begins with a detailed discussion of your health history and goals. We may discuss your menstrual cycle, ovulation, fertility history, PCOS symptoms, medications, blood sugar or metabolic concerns, digestion, sleep, stress, nutrition, exercise, and other aspects of your health.

Your acupuncturist will then develop an individualized treatment plan. Fine, sterile acupuncture needles may be placed on the abdomen, legs, arms, back, or other areas depending on your presentation. Electroacupuncture may also be incorporated when appropriate.

Because menstrual, hormonal, and metabolic changes occur over time, PCOS is generally treated as an ongoing process rather than with one or two isolated acupuncture sessions. Treatment frequency is individualized according to your symptoms, goals, menstrual cycle, and whether you are actively trying to conceive or undergoing fertility treatment.
